My last name, Xu (徐), doesn’t have a direct English equivalent in pronunciation; a close approximation would be “shyoo” or “shyu.” In other languages/regions, common romanizations include Hsu (Wade–Giles), Tsui (Cantonese), Seo (Korean), and Chee (Hokkien/Teochew). “Xu” can also correspond to several Chinese surnames (e.g., 许, 胥, 续), which may have different pronunciations across languages and dialects.
